Assessment Criteria

1.3 Essay Organization

“One guiding question will be provided for each passage on a central technical or formal element that may provide an interesting point of entry into the text. Although it is not compulsory to answer this question, students should be aware that it is expected that the analysis will be focused on a particular aspect or aspects of the text. Students may propose an alternative point of entry about any other technical or formal element of the text they feel important in order to provide such a focus.”

'Comment', 'examine', and 'explore'

⇒ analyze the relationship between form and meaning and evaluate by stating how successful the text is at achieving its purpose (Criterion B)

Each question has both a specific and a general part, pertaining to either style or purpose.

1. Begin with fundamental details → writer, title, text type, context, topic

What information is provided about the writer?

To what extent do the details of when and where the passage was published affect its contents?

Expressed in as few words as possible, what is the topic?

2. Identify the purpose of the passage

What is the passage trying to say or achieve regarding its topic?

There are two approaches to writing the essay of which the choice is governed by the guiding question: organization by techniques (easier) vs ideas (more effective)

Expert opinions develop Ethos and Logos with insights to provide a deeper understanding of topics.

Decision making is possible with access to reliable information which helps individuals make informed decisions in their personal and professional lives.

Magazine articles often aim to provide readers with detailed information on a particular topic, whether it's scientific discoveries, health advice, or cultural phenomena. They help readers stay informed and educated about subjects that are relevant to their interests or needs.

Magazine articles can influence cultural norms, fashion trends, and lifestyle choices. For instance, beauty and fashion magazines often set trends that their readers follow.

Entertaining / Education and Skill Development

Many magazines include content designed to entertain their audience. This can include celebrity interviews, humor columns, human interest stories, and lifestyle pieces. The goal is to engage readers and provide a pleasant reading experience.
